Hi Swamishishu,

The year started with a bang! Greenpeace activists scaled Essar's head office in Mumbai to unfurl a banner that revealed Essar’s plans for Mahan- one of the oldest sal forests in Asia. This act made headlines around the world and forced Essar to make its first attempt to silence all opposition to its plans for a coal mine in Mahan. A 500 crore SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) suit against Greenpeace!

The support for Junglistan – the movement to save the forests of Mahan and the homes and livelihoods of its people has rapidly grown.

  • The International Day of Forests (March 21) saw Junglistan - ledThunderclap send out an online blast of support for forests that had over 12000 people participating. #StandforForests began trending on Twitter in over 30 countries including India, Australia, USA, and Canada.
  • On May 18, over 100 countries rose in support for the people of Mahanand demanded that the forests be left alone.
  • The Gram Sabha with forged signatures of villagers was declared invalid thanks to the pressure from the people of Mahan and our persistent supporters.

But, the fight isn’t over yet! The new Gram Sabha is due to be heldbetweenAug 16 and 22.
Your contribution can further this fight to save the forests of Mahan!
The announcement of a new Gram Sabha has triggered a series of outrageous attempts designed to silence criticism against the proposed coal mine, discredit Greenpeace’s work and intimidate the people of Mahan. Starting with the SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) suit [1], then the IB report [2] and finally the two midnight arrest of activists, the crackdown continues.

However, we will not be silenced! We live in the largest democracy in the world where every Indian citizen is entitled to the freedom of speech and expression. We need your support to ensure that the Gram Sabha is held in a free and fair manner.

Your donation can change the lives of generations in Mahan!
Your contribution can further this fight to save the forests of Mahan!
Thank you
